Want to be Memorable? Introduce Yourself!

Today, more than ever, the ability to stand out, and be recognized and remembered as a leader is more valuable than ever. As our world becomes more connected the leadership opportunity continues to grow.

While being a leader, standing out, and being memorable at times take large public actions, there are also many things we can do on a daily basis that still have a significant impact.

Today I want to share with you something that I think separates great authentic leaders from the rest… Making the introduction!

The Scenario

Have you ever gone to an event, meeting, conference and felt like you were on the outside looking in? The same feeling could be experienced when you start a new job or move into a new department… The feeling can be overwhelming, intimidating, and even frustrating.

Now, when you think back to these events has anyone ever taken the time to go out of their way to introduce themselves, welcome you, and really show some genuine interest? What was your impression of this person? Chances are they are fairly positive, and the fact that you even remember this person and what they did is something to take note of. In my experiences I have always had so much appreciation for the people who take the time to introduce themselves and make me feel welcome in an environment that was otherwise foreign!

This is the type of introduction that I am talking about! The type that will make you memorable! There are countless situations where this type of leadership can be shown, it is up to you to identify the situation, have confidence in yourself, and take action!

The Opportunity!

Now, if there were such an easy and simple task, everyone would be doing it… But that is what makes this facilitation so powerful, it takes a little bit of genuine interest, confidence, and the ability to move slightly outside your comfort zone… And it is these factors that deter the large majority of people from acting… Creating this great opportunity for you to step in and not only be a leader, but show genuine interest in someone and develop a relationship!

What do you have to lose?

If you are ever in a situation where you recognize someone who is on the outside, and your mind begins that inner back-and-forth dialogue of whether you should go and introduce yourself or not(the other side of the argument is that someone else will do it so you don’t need too, it’s not Your job)… GO INTRODUCE YOURSELF! I can guarantee you three things:

  • You will be intrinsically motivated and energized by doing the right thing
  • You will be remembered by that person and they will likely tell others about your action
  • And you will have established a genuine foundation for which a relationship can be built!

Your Turn… What do you Think?

I would love to hear your experience…

Have you ever been on either side of this interaction? How did you feel when someone welcomed you in? How did you feel when you took the time to introduce yourself and invite someone in? Do you think that this has a role in leadership?

Thank you for taking the time to read, share, and be a part of my community! :)
