What if life were easier?
I was asked an interesting question earlier this week by a friend,
“Tyrell, what would your life look like if your professional career wasn’t so constantly stressful, demanding and borderline overwhelming?”.
I thought about it for a minute, and then the answer became crystal clear in my head.
“Boring”
And in that answer I re-affirmed a learning I have becoming more comfortable with over the past few years.
My life continually gravitates to the biggest challenges I can get my hands on. I crave the challenge. I crave the demand, I crave the intensity.
This is my Addiction
But there is a method to the madness.
I choose to do things that are hard, that others aren’t willing to do – solely because I believe this is our greatest catalyst for personal growth. This is our magical elixir that grants us access to flow and heightened states of performance – which in turn enhance and intensify every experience we’re a part of.
More importantly, flexing this muscle over time provides our greatest opportunity for long term compounded growth and personal discovery. I’m not in it for the short game – today, tomorrow or even this year – we’re running a long race – 20, 30, 40, 50 years. And through this lens I can let go of my ego and de-prioritize the extra dollar or next “title” today or tomorrow.
My goal is to arbitrage the learning opportunity of life.
Paradoxically, this is the one thing more than any extrinsic reward (money, status, title) that we all have access to.
What does this look like?
It starts with laying the right foundation. Understanding your core Purpose, Passion and Values and weaving them into every single decision you make and path you choose.
This is a conversation with ourself that never ends, but evolves over time. But once this journey to knowing our greatest self as started, all we need to do is jump into the deep end, embrace fear and slide into Flow.
If you trust yourself, your gut, and the path you have chosen, the rest will simply follow.
And you will never go back to the easy path… What once was your life will look… “boring”.
