“I’m so sorry, I just didn’t have the time to do that”
I cringe as I hear the words leave my mouth.
Believe it or not the smallest stories we tell ourselves impact the life we live.
And the story of our relationship with time is one of the most important of them all.
As my life continually becomes more streamlined and intentional around the things I am ridiculously passionate about I have focused on dissecting my own relationship with time and the things that consume it.
And I’ve realized there is something we do unintentionally that sabotages our greatest asset in life.
We give away the ownership of our time.
When you hear those words leave your mouth, you have given up ownership. You have surrendered your empowered ability and right to choose one thing over the other. You have fallen into a victim’s mentality.
Seems pretty harsh doesn’t it? In reality it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal at all. But let me ask you to pause for a minute and think about all of the times and people you have uttered this to?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life it’s that the continuous sustained repetition of anything leads to significant impact. Both positive and negative.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t make the time for that”
This is my new choice. Yup, that’s it. The difference of one word.
But to explicitly state that not making the time for something means it was a conscious decision I had made, rather than a victimized reality I live in – changes everything.
When I hear these words come out of my mouth I immediately pause and reflect on whether I made the right decision to honor one thing over the other. I recognize that I have a choice of where I invest my time and energy. And I’ve gotten to this point of standing here in front of someone telling them I didn’t choose to the make the time as a result of many of my previous decisions.
I feel empowered.
Ultimately this makes me a better person. It forces me to think critically about the people, experiences, BHAGs, and adventures I want to proactively and intentionally make the time for in this short life.
Are you owning the decisions and choices that lead where your time is spent?
Or are you falling victim to it?
